Facebook prunes 'malicious' news feed posts

The social network giant, Facebook is changing the algorithm that picks up posts for news feeds to do a better job of spotting 'low quality' web pages. Instead, the algorithm will start to seek out more informative posts. Facebook have said that the change was part of broader work that it was doing to make it less profitable for spammers to use their platform.

The new change was aimed at websites that contained 'little substantive content' and were set up only to profit from users' attention. Facebook have said that they are already working on ways to stop spammers from advertising on the platform and now want to do more organic posts that turn up in people's newsfeeds.

The change in the way posts are displayed could help Facebook fight fake news as fakers are often financially motivated and blanket their false information articles in adverts.

Facebook has said that the updated algorithm would be rolled out globally in the coming months.
